How to get to Finchingfield By Car

Finchingfield is fairly well-connected by road but being a rural village, some of the roads around it are narrow country lanes. So don’t go to far off the beaten track.

Key roads to Finchingfield are the B1053 and the B1057 are the main routes in the area, connecting Finchingfield to nearby towns. Also local roads feeding into Saffron Walden, Thaxted, Great Dunmow, Braintree, Sible Hedingham, Haverhill.

From London / M11 / Stansted direction to Finchingfield, once off the M11 motorway take the A120 towards Great Dunmow. After coming off 1 of the 2 exits for Great Dunmow expect smaller country roads to get to Finchingfield. Traffic can get heavier around peak hours, especially near Stansted or on the approaches from Chelmsford. From the East A120 take the exit for Stebbing B1256, take the B1256 West and either turn off for Blake End or futher for Stebbing.

From London Stansted Airport (STN), driving distance to Finchingfield is about 15 miles (~24 km), which takes ~20-25 minutes under good conditions.

Using a car provides flexibility, essential for many local journeys given limited public transport in such rural areas. Down side is parking in Finchingfield village can be limited, road closures or works may affect routes.

Buses are one of the primary public transport options for Finchingfield, though service is quite limited.

London Stansted (STN) is the closest big commercial airport to Finchingfield, about 10-11 miles away. Other airports within reasonable distance:

  • London Southend Airport (~28-30 miles)
  • Cambridge Airport also reachable for certain domestic/regional flights.

From Stansted: driving or taxi takes ~20-25 mins. There is also public transport/bus/taxi combinations. Example: bus from STN + local bus (417 etc) through “The Welsh Princess” service to Finchingfield takes about 2 hour 8 minutes. Or from London Stansted Airport take the train to Audley End then the 417 or 419 bus to Finchingfield 1 hour 10 minutes.
